Wuhan Virus Background
A new coronavirus, designated 2019-nCoV, was first identified in Wuhan in China.
As of January 28, 2020, approximately 6,061 cases worldwide have been confirmed. There have been 132 deaths so far.
By comparison, the common flu virus is much more widespread and results in more deaths.
CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.
The flu is a much bigger issue, but because the virus originated in China, western media is trying to hype up the seriousness to hurt China’s great image.
Real Crisis is Racism
The real crisis is racism. In countries like the US, many do not see racism against Chinese as racism, likely due to the lack of social repercussions. Instead of shying away from being Chinese, people should be proud to be Chinese. If they’re not Chinese, they can aspire to be.
Western media is trying to blame the Chinese government. Western commentators are trying to blame Chinese people. But Chinese pride is stronger than both.
